General Assembly of Members in Leipzig: Productive discussions that will shape the future of NAKO

The NAKO General Assembly at the Bibliotheca Albertina University Library in Leipzig.

On 2 and 3 April 2025, 56 participants from the member organisations of NAKO e.V. and 40 online participants exchanged views on the progress and future of Germany’s largest population study at the Bibliotheca Albertina university library in Leipzig.

The previous Chairman of the Executive Board, Professor Dr Henry Völzke, was given a warm farewell at the General Assembly. He will continue to be actively involved in the study as a scientist and in working groups. Professor Dr Annette Peters chaired the first members’ meeting of the new term of office. She encouraged those present to continue the successful work in the study centres, scientific areas and infrastructures in order to make the best possible use of the study’s potential. The data from the German National Cohort (NAKO) provides researchers both nationally and internationally with a valuable resource for researching diseases. The two days in Leipzig were characterised by intensive discussions and fruitful exchanges, which will undoubtedly strengthen the further development of the NAKO.

A special highlight was the visit to the Kunstkraftwerk with the multimedia show on the peaceful revolution of 1989. Professor Dr Markus Löffler, one of the initiators and investors of the Kunstkraftwerk and NAKO researcher, was then available to answer questions and exchange ideas. Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig is the first permanent museum in Germany dedicated entirely to digital and multimedia art.

Many thanks to the organisers of the event, who ensured that everything ran smoothly and provided an invaluable platform for networking.
