Research projects

The information from the repeated medical examinations and the surveys of the participants in the German National Cohort (NAKO) are available in a central database. The data are analysed and evaluated by international scientists for public health projects. Numerous studies have already been completed and published. Many projects are still in progress or are just being applied for.

On this page you can discover research projects related to the German National Cohort (NAKO) as well as other NAKO-associated projects.

Research projects and international research applications

You can use the NAKO TransferHub online platform to view current research projects and gain access to the data directory with a description of the study variables.

Health status of ex-professional footballers in focus

The SoccHealth football study is an additional project of the German National Cohort (NAKO) on the health status of former professional footballers. The health status of ex-professional footballers is being researched. How does the physical strain during the sporting career affect health in middle and old age? The general health status and disease prevalence of ex-professional footballers is compared with the general population.

Recruitment was completed in September 2023. A total of 348 ex-professional footballers aged 40-69 took part in the NAKO examination programme. Of these, 222 also received an MRI examination.

The examination data is part of the NAKO TransferHub and can be requested by interested researchers for scientific purposes.
