The German National Cohort (NAKO) observes and analyses the participants’ diet from an epidemiological perspective. This means that dietary behaviour is surveyed in order to identify or confirm dietary patterns and correlations with diet-related diseases.
Goals:
Further development of the scientific concept for estimating normal consumption
Definition and application of quality assurance measures
Carrying out the modelling and release of dietary variables for scientific use
Prioritisation of subject areas and coordination of the scientific use of nutritional data in the NAKO
Derivation of various dietary patterns
Development of a concept for the determination of biomarkers of nutrition
Further development of the survey instruments, e.g. for the third-party study
First results
Evaluation of the food intake survey instruments: Based on two approaches in combination with information from an external population, the methodology for estimating food intake among the NAKO participants was evaluated. The result was a user-friendly procedure consisting of short questionnaires, so-called 24-hour food lists, and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which are used in the NAKO.
