When recording the dental status, the number of teeth present is determined.
The detailed dental examination is only offered in some study centres. During this examination, caries, tooth and jaw misalignments, gum recession and tooth loss are examined, as inflammatory diseases of the periodontium (periodontitis) can have an impact on general health. Examination of the tooth pockets can be somewhat uncomfortable. In the case of inflammation, localised bleeding may occur, which will stop within a short time without further treatment. In rare cases, the gums are injured during the examination and an inflammation may develop, which is painful and requires medical treatment. Very rarely, the maxillary sinus can be injured during this examination, which can cause inflammation and temporary pain. The examination of the dental pockets is not carried out for participants who have a heart pass.
In the NAKO second re-examination, the tooth count is part of the M7 examination module, which records the dental status (number of teeth) and dental examination.
