As part of the German National Cohort (NAKO) ophthalmic examination, participants’ visual acuity is tested in both eyes and photos of the centre of the eye are taken. The images are examined for abnormalities at the Institute for Ophthalmic Research in Tübingen.
The examination of the eyes provides important information for research into common diseases. The photos of the central fundus of the eye can not only visualise eye diseases, but also reveal vascular changes that indicate systemic diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.
First results
In the baseline survey, 49,193 participants received a retinal photograph, 51,364 completed the eye test and 204,406 participants were interviewed on the subject of the eye.
