People who had experienced trauma such as abuse or neglect during childhood or adolescence were around twice as likely to develop depression in adulthood. The findings suggest that a significant proportion of cases of depression are associated with such childhood adversities. They underline the importance of early prevention – in particular, protection against emotional abuse and neglect can make a significant contribution to reducing depression in the long term.
