Unfulfilled desire to have children in the general population

Project goals

The aim of this project is to survey participants in the German National Cohort (NAKO) in Halle who have been unable to conceive. In addition, reproduction-specific markers in the blood will be measured in the participants.

Although it is estimated that one in six couples in Western populations have an unfulfilled desire to have children, surprisingly there are no valid studies on the exact age-specific prevalence in the general population. This project therefore aims to evaluate the age-specific prevalence of infertility in the general population and analyse its association with reproduction-specific serum markers (anti-Müllerian hormone in women, inhibin B in men). Infertility is recorded using an online questionnaire. Immunoassay analyses are performed to determine the anti-Müllerian hormone level in women and the inhibin B level in men.
