The use of body sensor-based health apps and wearables to change physical activity and prevent physical inactivity

Project goals

The aim of this study is to investigate the use of smartphone and wearable-based activity trackers to promote health behaviour change in adults in Germany.

Specific objectives include assessing ownership, usage patterns and user characteristics of activity trackers, investigating factors influencing acceptance and usage, and evaluating behavioural changes and health changes associated with these technologies. The study addresses the lack of long-term studies on usage and the need to understand socio-economic and health-related differences in usage. The study was conducted using a web-based questionnaire that was integrated into the German National Cohort (NAKO).
