Music and Health – Associations Between Active Music-Making, Music Reception, Quality of Life, and the Occurrence of Chronic Diseases in the General Population

Project goals

For the first time in a large population-based study, both active music-making and music reception behaviors will be recorded. This will allow the investigation of associations between musical activity and sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, as well as chronic diseases, in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. Additionally, the longitudinal component will examine the influence of musical activity on life expectancy, morbidity, and mortality.

Using seven short questions on active and passive music engagement, the frequency and duration of active music-making as well as the type of music played and/or listened to will be assessed. Active music-making here refers to playing an instrument or singing, while music reception includes the perception, processing, and emotional experience of music.
