Glucose metabolism: Oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT)

Project goals

The aim of the project is to diagnose glucose metabolism disorders in individuals without known diabetes. Based on the results of the oGTT, participants are classified into individuals without glucose metabolism disorders, individuals with prediabetes, and individuals with probable diabetes.

As part of the oGTT Level 3 project, all individuals who underwent an oGTT at the time of the NAKO baseline examination at the study centres in Augsburg, Neubrandenburg, Düsseldorf and Berlin-South will be offered another oGTT during the second and third examinations. As part of the oGTT, participants drink 75 grams of glucose (sugar) dissolved in water. Based on the oGTT, participants are classified as individuals without glucose metabolism disorders, individuals with prediabetes and individuals with probable diabetes. This data is used to determine the prevalence of glucose metabolism disorders. By performing the oGTT multiple times over time, conclusions can be drawn about individual developments in glucose tolerance status and thus, for example, risk factors for a deterioration in glucose metabolism can be identified.
